Horses on the Roman Frontier

Join the cavalry of Hadrian's Wall: four-horned saddles, bronze harness charms, barracks shared with horses and a winter patrol.

In AD 122 Hadrian began a wall across northern Britain, and cavalry horses helped guard it. Your child reports to the fort at Cilurnum (Chesters) to discover how riders stayed on without stirrups, why soldiers and horses shared barrack blocks, how hundreds of horses were fed, and how parade horses were decorated. They label a four-horned saddle, design a harness pendant and a chamfron, plan a barrack room, work out feed for the fort, map a patrol along the Wall and send back their own field log.
